Hey DJs?! Fill in your metadata!
Why do you guys never add metadata to the tracks that you release on the web?
Is it because you don’t know what metadata and ID3v2 tags are or doesn’t your software support this?**
Tell me, why is the metadata mostly empty?
Let me give you an example:
I recently downloaded a mix from The Subs on soundcloud. The name of the *.mp3 file was ‘switch2.mp3′. Was it so hard to change the name to ‘The Subs – Switch October Mix‘ ?
You see it’s not only about metadata but also about consistent names.
Sometimes I see that the filename is :
SUBS END OF AUGUST MIX.mp3
instead of:
The Subs – End of August Mix.mp3Or sometimes it is:
THE SUBS – End of August mix.mp3
or
the subs – end of august mix.mp3
instead of
The Subs – End of August Mix
Please use the same name in your files!!
After changing the name I found out that my Last.fm Scrobbler couldn’t scrobble the mix because it had no metadata:
So I filled in the most important metadata:
It’s also possible (in Windows) to do a right mouse button click on the *.mp3 file and choosing Properties to complete/edit/change the metadata:
You might wonder why this is so important? Well let me give you an example.
If I play this track my Last.fm scrobbler shows me this:
Do you get it?! Free promotion! Now Last.fm knows that I played that mix from The Subs. My friends will see this, every visitor on my wordpress blog will see the name (Last.fm widget), etc…
If the mix is highly popular it might end up on the Last.fm frontpage in the ‘Hyped’ or ‘Popular’ section.
And this is only an example or scenario from Last.fm! There are tons of other reasons why you should fill in the correct metadata!!
Please, spread the word!
(Sorry for using The Subs as a bad example in this post but it was the first one that I found here)
